About Us

Simaril Inc. opened its doors in 1987 as part of the Welcome Home program which was developed to assist people living at the Manitoba Developmental Centre to move from the institution into the community. Three people were welcomed into their new home in the St. Vital area in February of that year. In January 1988, and then again in March 1989, two more homes were opened in the same area. And so began the Community Residential Program. People supported by this service receive 24 hour supports to live and participate in the community.

In 1998, Simaril began a Supported Independent Living service, assisting one person who had previously lived with 24 hour supports to fulfill a dream and move into an apartment of his own with significantly less support and far more independence. This program has expanded over the years and by the end of 2014 Simaril Inc. was providing independent livings supports to 7 people with supports ranging from 10 to 20 hours per week depending on individual need. Supports in these settings typically revolve around assisting with budgeting skills, cooking, household upkeep, and supporting people to be more involved in their community.

Over the past 27 years the Simaril community has evolved its person-centred model, but the essence of this original philosophy of family atmosphere is still present in the close-knit atmosphere and the ability of each person to get to know everyone else receiving supports. Simaril looks forward to supporting more people to live and thrive as inclusive members of the community with the goal to expand services and opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities.

Mission: Simaril Inc., supports empowered living in the community for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Vision: Barrier free acceptance and full opportunity for all people.

Values: Our work to support people with intellectual disabilities to live a full life as part of their local community is guided by the following values:

Integrity: At Simaril, we take responsibility for our individual actions and for the actions of one another, holding each other to a high standard. We demonstrate the ownership necessary for ensuring quality services that support our supported individuals’ rights to a full and equal life. We will be transparent, fully participating in any endeavor we undertake and we will reflect on our activities to ensure that our mission is achieved.

Respect: Each of us at Simaril has made a commitment to recognize our impact on the people we serve. We understand that our actions toward and involving our supported individuals reflect our belief that all human beings are entitled to opportunity, compassion and a dignified life. Every voice is heard and appreciated and our actions will reflect that we hold one another, the supported individuals we serve and the community in high regard.

Diversity: At Simaril, we understand the importance of difference and how it enriches community life. We recognize and embrace our role in ensuring adults with intellectual disabilities are treated with justice and equity. We work with local communities to encourage and support participation for people with an intellectual disability in ‘ordinary places.’

Empowerment: At Simaril we believe in the power of self-determination for all people. We encourage individuals to imagine and visualise a life for themselves in their own community, and we provide supports and address barriers that assist them to realise that life.
